OOI CI Release 2 Workshop Proposal: on CEI user engagement

Organization

Specify any of the following workshop information that you have an estimate for.

Start Date 2011.08.00
Total Days 1
Proposed Location Wherever the users are,
Proposed Venue

Description

Briefly describe of the intent of the workshop and the special knowledge of attendees.

This proposal is for a series of user workshops rather than just one workshop that would (1) identify R2 adopters, (2) refine user/adopter requirements, (3) describe and prioritize scenarios the users expect to work, (4) develop a testing and adoption plan integrated into the R2 planning process, and (5) lead to the refinement of the product description and technical scope of R2. Ideally, the workshops would identify a group of core early adopters and adoption scenarios to be functional by the end of R2 – so the objective is not just to produce "paperwork" in the form of requirements or plans but also "open communication channels".

I am not in a position to organize or even describe a workshop like that myself in detail because I am not involved directly in any user communities. But I would like to work with others to maybe strengthen the case for such workshops, bring out additional requirements, or work on their organization.

The workshops don't have to be directly related to CEI as long as there is an even small chance that they might require CEI capabilities indirectly. For example, they could be directly related to DM indirectly relying on CEI capabilities.

Target Deliverables

Indicate what product(s), conclusion(s), or other result(s) should be achieved as a result of the workshop.

(1) identify R2 adopters,
(2) refine user/adopter requirements,
(3) describe and prioritize scenarios the users expect to work,
(4) develop a testing and adoption plan integrated into the R2 planning process
(5) contribute to the refinement of the product description and technical scope of R2

In addition, there would also be "intangible" deliverables in the form of open communication lines as described above. Realistically #1 above as well as a tight agenda (I don't see those as "brainstorming" workshops) would have to be done before a workshop.

It is a bit unclear to me what these users would be. On the OOI level, we know the R2 user community: OOI internal RSN and CGSN marine observatory operators and data analysts. Do we envision some external early adopter CEI users, e.g. to expore CEI components standalone outside of the ION system? Or some experimental installation of ION R2 with different early adopter users? This should be clarified. If it is OOI/CI wide, UX and the architecture team should drive it.

I believe this workshop corresponds almost perfectly to the Pacific Northwest 2011 tour that the UX team has undertaken. Will ask Susanne to review and comment.
