An array of six gliders will survey a broad region of the continental shelf waters.

Glider sampling area (approximate):  130 x 185 km box over outer shelf and slope sea

Box Corners:

   SE: 39.00°N, 69.92°W
   SW: 39.00°N, 71.50°W
   NW: 40.67°N, 71.50°W
   NE: 40.67°N, 69.92°W

Coastal Gliders (Teledyne-Webb Slocum Gliders) will fly through the water column along saw-tooth paths, penetrating the sea surface and diving down to a maximum depth of 1000 meters.  In April 2014, two gliders were deployed at the Pioneer Array.  Each glider contains Engineering Data describing its location (latitude / longitude), depth, way points, heading, speed, and velocity for a given time.  Engineering data are needed to use the scientific measurements from the gliders instruments.


Pioneer Array Glider Lines





The map to the left indicates the five glider tracks along the Pioneer Array off the coast of New England.  The x- and y-axes are latitude and longitude in decimal degrees.  Pioneer Array mooring sites are represented by circles.  Boundaries of the glider and AUV operating areas  are represented by the blue and red dashed lines, respectively).  The five glider tracks are represented by the solid color lines:

  • Eastern Boundary (EB); green
  • Frontal Zone (FZ); red. Note: two gliders will occupy this track
  • Slope Sea
    • (SS-1); blue
    • (SS-2); cyan
  • Gulf Stream (GS); gray

Currently deployed gliders occupy the EB and FZ lines.
