Introduction

The System Engineering Methodology is documented in several OOI CI documents, including the CI System Life Cycle Plan, the CI ITV Plan and others.

Engineering Process and Plan Overviews

A brief summary:

  • There are 4 Releases in the 5-year development project: Data Distribution Network, Managed Instrument Network, OnDemand Measurement Processing, Integrated Modeling Network, Interactive Ocean Observatory.
  • There are 4 Phases in each Release: Inception, Elaboration, Construction, Transition.
  • There are 2 or 3 Iterations of 8 week length in each of the first 3 Phases.
  • There are 3 Periods in each Iteration: Design Period (2 weeks), Development Period (5 weeks), Wrap-Up Period (1 week).
  • At the end of each Phase are Milestone Reviews: Life Cycle Objectives (LCA, end of Inception), Life Cycle Architecture (LCA, end of Elaboration), Initial Operational Capability (IOC, end of Construction) and Product Readiness Review (PRR, end of Transition, coincides with subsequent LCO)
